Hexham Ramblers celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Ramblers Association with members past and present.

Margaret Thorburn, past group member describes the event: "For me and many others, no longer actively walking with Hexham Ramblers, it was a time for meeting up with friends we had not seen for many years. The evening started with a Buffet Supper, followed by Jim Anderson’s rendition of his ‘true-to-life’ poems. We then had a slide show spanning the years of the club. We saw lots of faces not with us any more."

Will there or won't there be a bus, that was the question?

Posted by Peter Matthews, Staffordshire Area Publicity on 04/10/2010

To celebrate 75 years of the RA, Staffordshire Area Groups all got together to walk the entire length of the Staffordshire Way on 18th September;the idea was for each Group to walk a section of the route , all starting in the morning. Owing to the length of the route it was not feasible to make it a relay, or for Groups to meet up during the walk so the next best thing was for all to be walking at the same time.

Half way through our 75th Anniversary year and the response to Baton Walk celebrations has been fantastic. So far many groups have picked up their baton and organised over 160 walks and other events. There have been many innovative ideas.

75 Years of Ramblers – let’s do Kinder again

Posted by Salle Dare on 06/05/2010

The Manchester and Salford Ramblers like a good celebration. One of the newest groups in the country looking forward to celebrating 75 years. We’d had our exhibition in February, which had been a great success, and collected lots of material about the Kinder Trespass. April was our baton month so we thought “why not do it again” and chose the 24th April - by chance the actual anniversary date of the original trespass.

A most beautiful spring day

Posted by Graham Morgan, Pembrokeshire Ramblers on 14/03/2010

On Sunday 14 March, on a most beautiful Spring day with wall-to-wall sunshine, the Pembrokeshire Ramblers celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Ramblers’ Association with two separate walks of varying length from the car park of the Jolly Sailor Public House at Burton.

The long walk of about 10 miles saw the party of 14 walk to Burton Church, then across the fields to Beggars Reach and through Benton Wood before eventually reaching their lunch stop at Llangwm Ferry. Afterwards, the walk continued though the village to Sardis by way of Badger Wood & Little Dumpledale. Crossing over the road, the party turned left and visited the Hanging Stone burial chamber before using a most delightful track that took them to Houghton. Having obtained permission from the landowners, the walk continued along private roads to Williamston & South Lodge before joining the minor road and heading down the track to Burton Church. Instead of retracing their steps, the walkers turned right and walked across the fields towards Barnlake before dropping down onto the Burton road where they turned left and made their way back to their cars at the Jolly Sailor.

75th Anniversary Events in March

Posted by The Ramblers on 21/02/2010

March is the month traditionally named for Mars, the Roman god of war and before the Gregorian calendar was adopted, it used to be the official start of the year. It certainly has the cheering feel of spring and despite the fact that we can still expect snow showers, most people take delight from the appearance of daffodils, iris, hyacinth, tulips, and a hint of the blankets of bluebells to come.

Hexham Ramblers celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Ramblers Association at Wall village hall with members past and present.

Margaret Thorburn, past group member describes the event: ‘On Saturday June 5th I attended a gathering of Hexham Ramblers celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the RA at Wall Village Hall on a perfect summer evening. For me and many others, no longer actively walking with Hexham Ramblers, it was a time for meeting up with friends we had not seen for many years. The evening started with a Buffet Supper, followed by Jim Anderson’s rendition of his ‘true-to-life’ poems. We then had a slide show spanning the years of the club. We saw lots of faces not with us any more. Finally, we had cake and refreshments. The cake had been made and iced by Barbara Anderson, and was cut by our oldest member, May Siddons.'

Ramblers - 75 years young

Posted by Tom Franklin, Ramblers CEO on 07/12/2009

The Ramblers was born into a troubled and changing world. Britain was in the middle of the great depression, with unemployment at over 20%. Germany had just formed the Luftwaffe and begun a programme of re-armament in contravention of the Treaty of Versailles. Women had been able to vote on equal terms with men for just seven years.
